I am super excited to announce some amazing goodies coming your way! Keep reading for 3 special events!
Christmas is our family’s favorite time of the year. The excitement of trees & lights, presents & treats, and family & friends puts a smile on everyone’s face. But as our children grow, I find myself continuously looking for ways to slough away the “entitlement” attitude of today’s youth and replace it with a genuine love and appreciation for what Christmas is really all about. The media is buzzing with the latest gadgets and toys, and everyone is filling out their wish lists before we have even gotten through Thanksgiving. How are we as parents to compete with all of this?
I want our children to experience the fun and anticipation that writing letters to Santa, having the elf visit, and decorating a tree bring. That’s part of being a kid. There is something magical about the Christmas season it’s hard to deny, even as an adult. I know – and I long for my children to know – that this magic isn’t really magic at all – but it is very real and very present! It’s Jesus . It’s the presence and celebration of the birth of our precious Savior.
Two years ago, God laid a special message on my heart that eventually developed into our favorite Christmas tradition – and now a book to share with others!
To make a long story short, Santa sent us Elfie with a letter saying he (Santa) would no longer be keeping a naughty or nice list because he had come to meet Jesus and discovered what grace is. Our job is to help teach Elfie about this grace. What greater lesson could we teach our kids this Christmas, than the unconditional and unending love of Jesus Christ?
So in our little corner of the world, Santa just got saved! And it is now our job to disciple Elfie!
We then spend the 25 days of December leading up to Christmas reading through the life of Jesus, doing crafts, and participating in various giving and service projects. Each day, Elfie appears in a silly spot and brings us the scripture passage and all the supplies we need for each craft/project.
We place a big emphasis on trying to reenact or imagine what each scripture passage might have been like in Jesus’s time. It really makes the Gospel come alive in the eyes of our children. We also place a major emphasis on serving and giving to others.
Our favorite Christmas tradition, and now our story, can all be found in a short little book called A Gospel Christmas: Our Journey Connecting Santa And His Elf To The Story Of Our Savior. You can grab the book anywhere books are sold or via the link below.
Don’t go yet! I have some great goodies just for A Momma’s Joy Readers!
Looking for a little help walking through the steps over the 25 days of December? You asked for it – and now it’s here! Check out this FREE PDF How-To Guide to go along with the book!

We joined the Elf craze soon after it came out. Ours has never been naughty, but they have received letters from our elf if they’ve had an especially difficult day with their behavior. I love the idea of using the elf to get to the heart of the season while also extending and teaching God’s grace rather than focusing on behavior that our society brings up at every turn. As for our favorite holiday tradition, we love the Advent Jesse Tree and I’ve participated in so many ornament exchanges and gifted sets away to family and friends. I’m always looking for new and fun ways of teaching our children about the true meaning behind each holiday. The ornament set you shared is adorable and the book is definitely one I’d love to read. Thanks for this opportunity!

What a beautiful way to introduce kids to a less confusing way of putting things.. without contradiction!! The list is not how I wanted my kids to view a healthy motivation for behaviour. I so want this for my kiddos. I tried Ann voskamos Advent book and ornaments but it was a bit too wordy for us. I still read it but would like something a little more integrated. Their Poppa plays Santa and their Grandma plays Mrs. Claus so it can get kinda confusing and don’t really know how to approach it.

Awesome and thank you! I pray this will be a great resource for your family!

I would love to use this as another way to point my children to Christ during the Advent season.

Jen..I wish my kids were little again! What a great way to teach the real meaning of Christmas and God’s love for us!! I may still get it to do with the kids I babysit..plus I want to read it myself!!
jen says
Thank you Shannon! I think it makes a wonderful addition even for me as an adult. I learn more from it with each read. God just seems to teach me something new every time!

Oh how I love this! I would love to bless my daughter and my grands with this idea! What an awesome gift idea! I always seem to go overboard on my grandchildren at Christmas and love watching the joy, but they are old enough now to begin understanding the true meaning of Christmas. For the past couple of years, my daughter has begun doing “something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read.” She doesn’t want them to come to “expect” more gifts, and wants them to understand that it truly is better to give than receive. Thank you for the chance!

That is awesome Rachelle! So glad you stoped by!!!!
